The word "algebra" comes from the Arabic word "al-jabr" which means "reunion of broken parts."
A 9th-century Persian mathematician named Al-Khwarizmi wrote a book called "Al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala" (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing).
So, when a students say they're "broken" by algebra... technically, algebra is supposed to FIX broken things! 😅
The irony isn't lost on me after 21 years of teaching it.
