Ukraine’s Paralympic team and officials will boycott the opening ceremony of the upcoming 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags and anthems, reversing years of restrictions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 🇺🇦🇷🇺🇧🇾
Despite ongoing conflict, the IPC granted six Russian and four Belarusian athletes entries to the Games starting March 6, marking the first time in over a decade that Russia’s flag will be present since its ban for doping and later geopolitical sanctions. Ukrainian officials called the move “outrageous” and a betrayal of sporting integrity with the war still underway.
Ukrainian sports minister Matvii Bidnyi said no Ukrainian official will attend the opening ceremony, while Ukrainian competitors may still participate in events. Italy and other European partners have also criticized the decision and some are boycotting official functions.
This protest highlights how international sport and politics intersect in unpredictable ways long after athletic competition has ended.
