"Microsoft Writes Data Into Glass for 10000 Years"
Microsoft’s Project Silica just crossed a major milestone. Using ultrafast femtosecond lasers, engineers can now etch digital data deep inside common borosilicate glass, the same material used in cookware, and preserve it for up to 10000 years.
Each small glass plate can store 4.8 terabytes, roughly two million books. Unlike hard drives or magnetic tape, this write once medium does not degrade in decades. It is resistant to heat, water, radiation, and electromagnetic interference. No power is needed to maintain the data once written.
The real breakthrough in 2026 is cost. Previously this required expensive fused silica. Now it works with inexpensive borosilicate glass, dramatically improving commercial viability.
Designed for cold cloud storage, Project Silica could eliminate energy intensive data migrations and redefine long term digital preservation. This is not faster storage. It is permanent storage.
Humanity may have just found a way to store its digital memory for millennia.
