Police Crack Down on Illegal E-Scooter Use Among Young Riders in Northern Tasmania 🛴⚠️
Police in northern Tasmania are stepping up enforcement as illegal and unsafe e-scooter riding increases among young people.
A week-long safety blitz across Devonport and Latrobe saw officers stop and speak with around 40 riders, issuing 10 penalties for rule breaches including riding without helmets and using devices on prohibited roads.
Most fines were for not wearing approved helmets, while one rider was caught using a personal mobility device on a restricted road and another young rider received a formal caution.
Police say the goal isn’t just enforcement but education, reminding riders that simple safety steps like wearing helmets and following speed limits can prevent serious injuries.
In Tasmania, e-scooters and other personal mobility devices must follow strict rules, including 15 km/h limits on footpaths and 25 km/h on roads and shared paths, with helmets mandatory for all riders.
Authorities warn they can seize devices for up to seven days if riders are caught using them dangerously or illegally.
With e-scooters becoming more popular among teens, police say the message is clear:
Ride smart, follow the rules, and keep everyone safe.
