Sri Lanka Court Orders Return of 84 Iranian Sailors’ Bodies
A Sri Lankan court has ordered that the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors killed when the Iranian warship IRIS Dena was sunk off Sri Lanka’s coast be handed over to the Iranian embassy for repatriation.
The frigate was hit by a U.S. submarine torpedo in the Indian Ocean while returning from a naval exercise in India, amid the escalating U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran. The attack killed dozens of crew members and left others missing.

Sri Lankan authorities recovered the bodies and transferred them to Galle National Hospital, where they were stored in refrigerated containers before the court approved their release to Iranian officials.
The case highlights Sri Lanka’s difficult position in the regional crisis. The country has stressed it is acting under international law and humanitarian obligations, while maintaining diplomatic ties with both Western powers and Iran.
As the wider Iran conflict continues to ripple across the region, the repatriation of the sailors is expected to be the next step in returning the victims home for burial.
