Google Maps changes with the introduction of Gemini
Google Maps is being redesigned with AI features powered by Gemini to make searching and navigation more conversational and visual. A new feature called “Ask Maps” lets users ask complex questions in a chat-style interface (e.g., combining criteria like location, opening hours, or parking). The system analyzes data from hundreds of millions of places and reviews to deliver personalized recommendations. Users can continue the conversation with follow-up questions to refine results without restarting the search. The feature is initially rolling out on mobile devices in the U.S. and India.
Navigation is also upgraded with “Immersive Navigation,” a 3D route view showing buildings, lanes, traffic lights, and crossings to help drivers better understand complex intersections.
The system highlights important road elements and uses smart zoom and transparency to keep the route visible even in dense urban areas. Voice navigation becomes more natural with improved speech generation and directions based on real landmarks (e.g., turning after a specific building rather than a distance). Near the destination, the app shows the exact entrance, the correct side of the street, and nearby parking options.
The update transforms Google Maps from a simple navigation tool into an AI-driven assistant that combines conversational search, richer 3D navigation, and more human-like guidance.
