Aussie News: 📌ST Carve-Up Sparks State Fight as WA and QLD Gain
Australia’s latest GST carve-up is reigniting the long-running battle over how the nation’s tax revenue is shared. Western Australia and Queensland are the biggest winners in the 2026-27 distribution, while New South Wales and Victoria will receive a smaller share of the overall pool.
The national GST pool is expected to grow to around $103 billion, with Queensland’s allocation rising to about $18.4 billion and WA’s climbing to roughly $9.3 billion.
But the shift is stirring anger in the eastern states. NSW leaders say the state is being short-changed despite having the largest population, while critics argue the system especially the 2018 GST “floor” that protects WA’s share is outdated and unfair.
The debate is far from over, with the Productivity Commission reviewing the GST system as pressure builds for a major overhaul of how billions in federal tax revenue are divided across Australia.
