Tasmanian Devils Still Fighting Deadly Facial Cancer
The iconic Tasmanian devil remains endangered, and one of its biggest threats is a rare contagious disease called Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD).
The cancer spreads when devils bite each other during fights or feeding, causing large facial tumours that stop them from eating and eventually lead to death. Since the disease emerged in the 1990s, wild devil populations have dropped by more than 80% in some areas.
But there is hope.
Conservation programs across Tasmania are breeding disease free devils, releasing them into protected areas, and studying devils that are showing natural resistance to the cancer.
Scientists say these efforts could help rebuild wild populations and protect one of Australia’s most unique animals.
Saving the devil is not just about one species it’s about protecting the balance of Tasmania’s ecosystems.
