Tasmania Moves to Shut Down Greyhound Racing 🐕
Tasmania is moving to phase out greyhound racing entirely, with the state government confirming plans to shut down the industry and compensate participants affected by the closure.
Under the proposal, greyhound racing in Tasmania would end by June 30, 2029, when the current funding agreement with TasRacing expires. The government says a compensation package will be offered to trainers, workers, and others in the industry as part of a transition plan.
The decision follows years of debate over animal welfare concerns and the long-term viability of the sport. Welfare groups have campaigned to ban greyhound racing, pointing to injuries and deaths among racing dogs and arguing the industry has lost public support.
Greyhound racing has also relied heavily on taxpayer funding, with tens of millions of dollars invested into the sector since 2009.
Supporters of the shutdown say it’s a major step forward for animal welfare in Tasmania.
Critics say the move will hurt workers and regional communities connected to the racing industry.
If the legislation passes, Tasmania could become one of the few places in Australia to completely shut down greyhound racing.
The debate over the future of racing in the state is far from over.
