New mushroom species that smell exactly like fresh shrimp — foragers keep cooking them by mistake 😂🍤🍄
Scientists just officially described three brand-new species of Russula (in the Xerampelinae group) that look almost identical to common edible mushrooms… but smell uncannily like fresh prawns or crab.
Foragers across Europe have been bringing them home, thinking they found some magical forest seafood. One researcher admitted he almost ate one raw before the smell finally clicked.
The mushrooms are completely edible (and reportedly delicious), but the shellfish aroma is so strong and consistent that DNA testing was needed to prove they’re three distinct new species.
The underground network is now officially trolling foragers with ocean-scented pranks.
