⚠️ The Destroying Angel looks exactly like a button mushroom. It kills more people than any other fungus on Earth.
Amanita virosa. Pure white. Perfectly formed. Completely odourless when young.
This is the forager's nightmare: a mushroom with no visible warning signs.
The button mushrooms you buy at the supermarket (Agaricus bisporus) are white, smooth, and mild-smelling. So is Amanita virosa when it first emerges from the soil.
Here is the only way to tell them apart:
✅ Agaricus bisporus: gills are pink to brown, never white. Smells faintly of anise or mushroom. No skirt around the stem when young. No volva at the base.
☠️ Amanita virosa: gills stay permanently white. Emerges from a distinctive egg-like volva (a cup at the base). Has a drooping skirt (annulus) on the upper stem. Smells faintly of honey when mature.
The volva is the key. Always excavate the base of any white mushroom before eating it. The death cap and destroying angel both hide their most important ID feature underground.
Amatoxins destroy RNA polymerase II. Your cells stop dividing. Your liver dies from the inside. Death in 6–16 days without a transplant.
In 2024, Italian poison centres recorded 34 deaths from Amanita virosa alone.
The most dangerous place to forage is not deep wilderness.
It's the edge of a park where you think you know what you're looking at.
Did you know the volva was buried underground? Most people don't. Share this — it genuinely saves lives. ☠️
