In Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace, Keira Knightley did not just play another handmaiden. She played Sabé, the Queen’s decoy, so the whole role depended on her being believable as Natalie Portman’s double.
The makeup and costume work did its job a little too well. Once Portman and Knightley were in full Queen Amidala makeup, even their own mothers reportedly had trouble telling them apart.
