⚠️ This mushroom looks identical to oyster mushrooms. Grows in the same habitat. Killed 17 people in Japan in a single autumn.
Pleurocybella porrigens. The Angel Wings. Pure white, fan-shaped, growing in clusters on conifer logs — almost indistinguishable from young oyster mushrooms at first glance.
For most of mycological history it was considered mildly edible or indigestible at worst.
Then came autumn 2004 in Japan.
59 people developed acute encephalopathy — brain inflammation — after eating Angel Wings. 17 died. All were elderly patients with pre-existing kidney disease.
The mystery: healthy individuals who ate the same mushrooms showed no symptoms. The toxin — still not fully identified — appears to activate its lethal mechanism only in compromised kidney function. The kidneys cannot clear it. It crosses the blood-brain barrier.
No specific compound has been confirmed. The mechanism remains incompletely understood in 2026.
What is confirmed: Angel Wings are no longer considered safe. Period.
How to avoid them:
☠️ Angel Wings: conifer wood only. Pure white, no yellow tones. No smell.
✅ Oyster mushroom: hardwood. White to grey. Faint anise smell. Gills run further down stem.
The wood tells you everything.
Conifer log. White. Fan-shaped. Walk away.
