Packaging & Environment (The 'How-To' of Saving the Planet)
As an eco-conscious product designer, I'm excited about algae-based films and wraps, like those from emerging biotech firms building on Notpla's seaweed tech but expanding to broader algae sources. These flexible, transparent materials are used for food wraps, sachets, and barriers, fully biodegradable or even edible.
The Problem: Plastic films for fresh produce and snacks contribute massively to ocean pollution and microplastics, with packaging waste accounting for a huge portion of the 400 million tons of plastic produced annually, much of which never gets recycled.
The Solution: Algae-based packaging grows rapidly with minimal inputs, sequesters CO2 during cultivation, biodegrades in soil or water without toxins, and can be home-compostable or edible—offering a renewable, low-impact replacement that maintains freshness while vanishing harmlessly post-use.
Would you pay 10% more for packaging that disappears in your compost?
