Packaging & Environment (The 'How-To' of Saving the Planet)
As an eco-conscious product designer, I'm loving the new mycelium-cellulose hybrid packaging coming out of labs like the University of Maine. This material combines mushroom mycelium with wood-derived cellulose nanofibrils to create strong, water- and oil-proof food packaging that's completely plastic-free.
The Problem: Traditional plastic food packaging creates massive waste that pollutes oceans and landfills for centuries.
The Solution: This mycelium-coated material biodegrades naturally in weeks, uses agricultural and wood waste as feedstock, and provides excellent barrier protection while being fully compostable at home.
Would you pay 10% more for packaging that disappears in your compost?
